This project pursues an interest in the properties of the Polaroid as object; for it is not just the visual peculiarities of the medium that can be exploited but also its various components. This work is not concerned with the image proper (which in any case can not be clearly, if at all, made out); indeed, in an effort to bypass such considerations only the pieces presented here were created to prevent the possibility of editing and thereby choosing those images I found more 'attractive' than others. I do not intend to imply by this that the project in its final form is not visual, rather that such visuals are an unpredictable result of the process; random, accidental, abstract. it is the properties of the Polaroid in its altered (unintended) state that is of concern. |

These images were produced by peeling the Polaroid soon after it was exposed. This leaves insufficient time for the chemicals to fix and harden. Upon peeling one finds beneath the image (which is on a slim plastic sheet) a wet turquoise residue similar in consistency to chewing gum attached to a black surface. Left to dry, this pales in colour until one is left with the images shown in the main section. If the Polaroid is left for sufficient time before peeling, rather than finding a sticky residue one finds a faint positive of the actual image; a fact the image/s above testify too. The reverse of the main image also has the appearance of a faint positive. |
